Southern Indian Fashion - the dhoti

The must have item for men of the last few centuries is the dohti or
lungi. Essentially a male skirt it is made up of a width of fabric 2m
long. Most commonly in white with a basic border it can also be
purchased in a variety of patterns. Tucked in at the waist a little
like a towel it hangs almost to the feet for a more formal look. When
it is time to be more active the bottom half folds up to form a sort
of miniskirt. This makes it very suitable for motorbike or bicycle
riding as well as running across the road. It also makes an excellent
napkin. Long enough to stretch face word while being worn it is
excellent for wiping crumbs out of your moustache or wiping your brow.
What you wear underneath is your own business but with the amount
they tend to fall off when you first try to wear them I would
recommend shorts. The more experienced men roll the top of theirs and
use the roll as a pocket. This fashion has caught on with about 75%
of males in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Best of all it makes a great sheet for the evening. Even though I seem
to be the only who has thought of alternate use.
