Meet the Meat

Date: 4 September 2010 10:51

Most Indians are vegetarians. You would be too if you saw the meat
markets here. Half a block from my hotel on the sidewalk thousands of
chickens are for sale. Live chickens are bound by their feet in groups
of five. On the ground it is hard to tell which chicken starts where.
Most of the chickens don't have the option of being the right way up
as their feet are so tightly bound together. This seems to be the
ideal way to transport chickens. Cyclists or rickshaws come to pickup
the chickens and deliver them. With a few short bars attached to a
bike a hundred chickens can be "hung" up by their feet. Rickshaws hang
the chickens from axles and the main cab itself.

Goats are commonly seen in the meat market. These poor souls calmly
roam around. They have no idea that they are next. The hot fly covered
meat sits on chopping blocks in a large building.  Crows line the
rafters ready for any tidbits left lying around. Bicycles frequently
leave carrying goat skins covered in blood and flecks of meat.

In Calcutta now.  Severe case of food poisoning causing diarrhea. Not
straying too far from the hotel. Spent yesterday in bed (or on the
toilet).

Tooth update - Have seen several dentists. The last one has confirmed
my tooth is cracked in half. I have no other choice but to have it
removed. Not feeling any pain right now but can't eat on the right
side of my mouth. There is always the risk of me getting food in the
crack and needing antibiotics again. The whole procedure should take
10 minutes to 2 hours depending on how difficult my tooth wants to be.

Considering how many destitute are in Calcutta it is hard to feel
sorry for oneself. I saw a young boy this morning whose back was
covered in several dozen fairly fresh deep whip marks.
