Kerala - God's Country

Date: 19 October 2010 11:42

Kerala is a refreshing breather from India. A democratic communist
stronghold, Kerala has managed to obtain the highest literacy rate in
all of India. While this hasn't transfered into a better economy it
has made for a cleaner more polite citizen. Here there are few
beggars, spitters or litter bugs. Below are a collection of unique
things about Kerala.

-  the coast is lined with scenic canals covered in floating plants
and flowers and the interior is a mass of tea and spice plantations.

- the most popular restaurant chain is the Indian Coffee House.
Despite a cafeteria feel the waiters dress in white suits with turbans
sporting a fan of fabric. Their flagship location is a four story
spiral restaurant with no stairs. A steep ramp climbs the center and
booths line the outside wall.

- restaurants often serve warm pink water

- locals always eat with their hands. Except for pizza and fries which
they use a knife and fork

-  rice is the most common meal combined with very hot spicy wet curries

- the buses only have windows in the front and back. The side windows
have accordion style shutters that can be put down if it rains. The
old ones have canvas tarps often ripped and tattered.
